Application Details
Surface Quality: Proper preparation of the floor before applying TEKNOSER 100 is essential. Otherwise, cracking may occur in the concrete. If the floor to be treated is soil, it must be thoroughly compacted. For this purpose, after compacting the soil with rollers, it should be wetted with water tankers and rolled again. Soil tests, such as plate load tests, should be carried out to verify whether the ground is suitable for surface hardener application. These operations should be repeated until the soil is adequately compacted. Greenhouse plastic sheeting should be laid over the soil surface to prevent the concrete from losing its mixing water and to prevent cracking. If TEKNOSER 100 is to be applied to screed concrete poured over existing concrete, the concrete surface should first be cleaned, and either floating or monolithic screed should be selected according to the project requirements. Where necessary, the surface should be roughened using suitable methods and the cement laitance should be removed. The existing concrete surface should be saturated with water at least one day before application, and standing water must be prevented. Application should be carried out on the saturated concrete surface. Before starting the application, planning should be carried out according to the project, panels should be formed in square sections, crack-control joints should be determined, and the screed should be poured accordingly. If box profiles are used when forming the panels, the mortar used for fixing them should be removed during screed placement. To ensure smooth screed edges, panel formwork should be cleaned before each application and TEKNOİL form-release agent should be used. The panel formwork used during screed placement must correspond to the designed screed height. Using formwork with a tongue-and-groove structure will prevent concrete under load from separating due to settlement at cold-joint sections. The steel reinforcement specified in the project should be positioned using appropriate spacers. If reinforcement is laid directly on the existing slab without spacers, it will not have adequate adhesion to the screed concrete and will therefore be unable to resist tensile stresses in the concrete, potentially causing the panel to crack under load. If a single layer of reinforcement is used, it should be positioned at the center of the concrete thickness. Steel reinforcement must not extend beyond the panel boundaries. If welded wire mesh is used, the mesh sheets must be overlapped. Cold joints and crack-control joints should be formed to control deformation and displacement occurring in the reinforced concrete slab under load without causing cracks in the concrete. To ensure that movement at these joints occurs only horizontally and in the intended direction, joint reinforcement should extend beyond the reinforced panel and be tied to the reinforcement of the panel. Plastic pipes or hoses should be placed over the sections of joint reinforcement extending beyond the panel, and the adjacent panel should then be formed and its concrete poured accordingly. This application prevents vertical and longitudinal movement of the cold joints during panel movement. In monolithic screed applications, TEKNOBOND AD epoxy primer should be used to ensure adhesion between the existing and new concrete. Before TEKNOBOND AD cures, sufficient sand should be broadcast onto its surface. If moisture cannot be removed from the existing concrete, TEKNOBOND 300 NB moisture barrier primer should be preferred. In floating screed applications, plastic sheeting should be laid over the existing concrete to prevent the new screed concrete from bonding to the existing concrete. Cracks that may occur in the screed concrete under service loads due to incorrect design and application will be reflected directly onto the surface hardener. The recommended compressive strength of the screed concrete should be at least C25 according to TS EN 206. The screed thickness should be above 12 cm and the water/cement ratio should be above 0.45.
Surface Preparation: Insulation boards with a minimum thickness of 2 cm should be placed around walls, retaining concrete, and similar areas surrounding the floor where the surface hardener will be applied. Insulation boards with a minimum thickness of 2 cm should also be placed around interior columns, elevator walls, and retaining walls. This creates sufficient clearance to allow the screed concrete to move. This allows the screed to expand and contract freely without cracking. After completion of the application, the remaining gaps should be filled with TEKNOPOLİDERZ 1K or 2K.
When concrete is poured between the panels, it should be compacted using a vibrating screed. Necessary corrections should be made using a straightedge and wooden float before water rises to the concrete surface. Water appearing on the concrete surface should be removed by sweeping it with a long-handled wooden straightedge.
TEKNOSER 100 should be spread evenly without causing segregation. Depending on ambient and weather conditions, spreading should begin once the concrete has hardened sufficiently to leave a footprint approximately 0.5 – 1.5 cm deep when walked on. The material should not be poured in piles onto the panel surface; it should be spread as uniformly as possible and leveled using a squeegee. If the material is poured in piles and spread with a squeegee, the areas where the material was first poured will remain thicker and excess material must be scraped off and removed from the surface. At the first stage, 2/3 of the total consumption should be spread over the concrete surface and distributed using a squeegee or machine. The material should be allowed to absorb water from the concrete and become damp (change color), after which sufficient disk troweling (power trowel pan finishing) should be carried out to integrate the surface hardener with the concrete. The remaining 1/3 should then be spread over the fresh concrete surface and finished using a disk trowel. Troweling should continue until the desired surface quality is achieved. During disk troweling, material extending onto the previously poured panel should be continuously removed with a spatula. Otherwise, a level difference and poor joint appearance may occur between the two panels. After rough troweling, fine troweling should be carried out. Fine troweling is performed using blades. Blade troweling should continue until the desired level of gloss is achieved.
Curing Stage: After completion of the troweling operation, TEKNOKÜR should be used to protect the concrete surface. TEKNOKÜR increases the strength of the concrete and slows the rate of water evaporation, allowing the concrete to set with its existing water content. It prevents shrinkage cracks and surface dusting. Curing must be carried out in both summer and winter.
After the concrete has hardened sufficiently, the joints between the panels should be cut to a minimum width of 4 mm to form joints. The resulting joints should be filled with TEKNOPOLİDERZ 1K or 2K to prevent adverse effects such as breakage and dusting caused by the joints.
Application Notes / Limitations
• To achieve the expected performance from the product, the timing of the troweling operation must be determined precisely.
• The timing of surface hardener application varies depending on the quality and type of concrete, as well as weather and ambient conditions. Application proceeds faster in hot weather and more slowly in cold weather. The setting stages of the concrete must be carefully monitored during application.
• The product may cause skin irritation. Protective gloves or goggles should be worn. A protective cream may also be applied to the hands before starting work. In case of contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with lukewarm water and seek medical attention.
• Avoid application in windy or extremely cold or hot weather conditions.
• When relative humidity falls below 40%, efflorescence may occur depending on the type of cement used in the concrete.
• Joint cutting should be carried out as soon as possible, preferably on the day after application. If cutting is delayed beyond 3 days, the concrete will have gained strength, making cutting more difficult, and concrete cracks may become visible on the surface.
• For TEKNOSER 100 application, concrete panels, power trowels, spreading and screeding equipment for special applications, and a polyurethane sealant gun are required.
• The application time for surface hardeners is affected by every variable influencing concrete placement and therefore varies according to the prevailing conditions.
• For mechanical application using an automatic spreader and laser screed, spreading can begin immediately after the concrete has been distributed to allow the surface hardener to become sufficiently wetted.
• Power troweling can begin once the concrete can support the weight of the power trowel.
• For manual application, the surface hardener should be spread once the concrete no longer retains fingerprints deeper than 3-5 mm.
• Periodic monitoring of the condition and development of the concrete ensures that correct decisions can be made regarding the stages and sequence of application.
• Surface hardener application should not be carried out under very windy or dry conditions.
• Concrete in which part of the cement has been replaced with fly ash should not be used, as it tends to be more sticky and has lower workability.
• Changes in concrete properties, such as water and cement content, may cause slight color differences.
• Surface hardeners may exhibit color variations depending on the natural variations of the concrete to which they are applied.
• To ensure color consistency and continuity, floor placement should be carried out as cleanly as possible and protected from environmental influences.
• Color variations during the drying process are normal and expected. Each operation should ensure proper TEKNOSER 100 application.
• Correct timing and troweling techniques are essential.
